The most important instrument in diagnosing AMD is the slit lamp. This is a type of microscope, which allows a direct view into the eye, even into the retina.
OCT ("Optical Coherence Tomography”) is a high-tech piece of equipment, which “scans” the retina using a laser (60,000 x per second). The data collected is displayed on a high-performance computer as a high-resolution picture of the retina including macula. The resolution is so good that even the individual layers of the retina, e.g. the photoreceptor layer (rods and cones) can be viewed.
OCT examination is used to determine without a doubt if the macula is “dry" or “wet". You can also test your macula yourself using the so-called Amsler grid. Using this test, you are able to detect early changes in the central field of vision, indicating the transition from dry to wet AMD. This test is best performed weekly, as follows:

While looking at the centre of the grid, notice if all lines in the grid are straight or if some areas are distorted, blurred or fuzzy.
-
Repeat this process with the other eye.
-
If lines appear bent or squares are warped, contact us immediately for an examination.
