Epiretinale Gliose, Vista Alpina Augenzentrum

In epiretinal gliosis, fine growths and membranes form on the retina. These can cause folds in the retina underneath.

In some cases, there is so much pull on the centre of the retina (“macula”) that it is torn apart, creating a so-called macular hole.

Epiretinal gliosis typically progresses very slowly - over years - and left untreated, results in reduced and distorted vision. Straight lines are often perceived as wavy.

The necessary retina surgery consists of a type of peeling, where the membranes are peeled off the retina using very fine tweezers.

After surgery, the retina “relaxes" again: in most cases, the macular hole disappears and the retina folds smooth out.

This retina recovery phase lasts up to twelve months; only then can vision be assessed conclusively.
