Intraocular pressure is essentially controlled by the aqueous humour. If the aqueous humour drainage is disrupted or too much aqueous humour is generated, it builds up inside the eye and intraocular pressure rises.
During surgery, a type of artificial drainage is created for the aqueous humour through a very small opening in the sclera. The aqueous humour can then drain from inside the eye and collects under the conjunctiva. A so-called bleb forms, improving aqueous humour drainage from inside the eye and lowering intraocular pressure.
Frequent check-ups (often daily) are required immediately following surgery (a few days to weeks), not least since post-op intraocular pressure is often too low or too high, requiring small corrections. In most cases, a stable pressure level with a βpretty" bleb is reached after several weeks.
The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia (anaesthetic eye drops) in the operating theatre at the Vista Alpina Augenzentrum in Visp. In rare cases, patients need to be admitted for a few days. In this case, we cooperate with the Inselspital Bern or the Jules Gonin Eye Clinic in Lausanne.
