Potential complications during surgery

Laceration of the capsule (tear in the capsular bag) is the most dreaded intraoperative complication as it complicates the further course of the cataract surgery and lowers the long-term prognosis for the respective eye.

On average, this complication still occurs in 1.5 to 2% of all cataract surgeries in Switzerland, North America and most European countries today (Ref 1). In comparison, the rate of complications* for Dr. Kristof Vandekerckhove, MD was 0.1% in 2014.

(* Complication rate calculated by current method: occurrence of vitreous body prolapse in the anterior chamber and / or posterior laceration of the capsule)

Potential complications after surgery

Complications during cataract surgery and the subsequent healing time are extremely rare.

Possible incidents after surgery include e.g. bleeding inside the eye, retina detachment, infections or corneal opacity.

These can jeopardise the eyesight but are extremely rare.
