Retina detachment is when the retina (= inner layer of the back of the eyeball) detaches from the choroid behind it. Retina detachment is always considered an ophthalmologic emergency because retina detachment most commonly continues to expand toward the macula (centre of the retina).
This means eye surgery is required as soon as possible, to prevent permanent, irreversible loss of visual acuity. Retina detachment usually precedes a retinal tear developing, for example at an existing weak point in the retina.
Due to this retinal hole/tear, fluid sometimes leaks from the vitreous cavity behind the retina, resulting in the retina detaching; figuratively speaking, like wallpaper peeling off the wall. Retina holes often appear in the form of flashes and/or sudden “floaters" (= floating black dots). Diagnosed early, retina holes can be “sealed” with special laser surgery.
Given that Vista Alpina Eyee center does not perform retina surgery on a daily basis, we work with specialty clinics outside the canton when it comes to retina detachments.
