Once AMD has been detected, it is important to start treatment with intravitreal medications as soon as possible.

This is a special medication injected directly into the vitreous body of the eye in very small doses. This stabilises wet AMD, maintaining the same level of visual acuity. Each week, which passes without treatment, is a “lost" week because the fluid retention quickly and permanently damages your photoreceptors (rods and cones).

Wet macular degeneration progresses much faster left untreated than the dry type and ends with scars forming at the centre of the retina.

The goal of intravitreal treatment is to dry the macula as quickly as possible and maintain the current level of visual acuity.

Any further loss of visual acuity, e.g. extended periods between two intravitreal injections is irreversible. The treatment used then can only stabilise the visual acuity at the (now even worse) level.
